It seems that more and more, New Zealand wines are being offered on wine lists in restaurants. Several years ago, my neighborhood wine shop featured a tasting of New Zealand wines and I was impressed with the quality. So, I definitely made time to squeeze in visits to a few wineries during my trip to New Zealand.
There are approximately 500 wineries throughout the small island country and the climate and alluvial soil lend to great growing conditions for the grapes. All types of varietals are grown, with Sauvignon Blancs and Chardonnays being amongst the most popular.
Aside from sampling the various wines (obvi) and learning about the various fermentation techniques, the best part was the picturesque views. Even with slight overcast, the rolling hills, ocean views, and lush greenery surrounding the vineyards were spectacular. Stay tuned for more adventures from this wonderful trip. Cheers!
